GeneralWith a maximum recorded age of 40 years, the old timers can attain 100cm in length. We have all I'm sure caught bootlaces but they can get to 5lb with a few over 7lbs. These larger specimens tend to be landlocked females which for some reason have not felt the urge to return to the Sargasso Sea to spawn..
Where to fish in the Bristol AreaAnywhere and everywhere, my garden pond is about the only place you won't find Eels! As eels can travel overland they can literally be found in any waters, I have even seen eels caught from road drains. But you don't want to fish there! No, waters that contain the largest head of eels generally have tidal sections or sluices that discharge directly into the sea. Good size eels can be caught from The Bristol Avon, Bristol Docks, Rivers Kenn, Axe,Brue and Huntspill.
Methods and baitsAs eels feed on the bottom legering is the obvious method. They feed most avidly at night or in highly coloured water where the light levels are low. They will take anything that may be edible and like strong smells. A favourite bait is a nice fresh lobworm. It is thought the slime on the worm gives off a scent they cannot resist, it is also a food they expect to find when the rivers are in flood. For larger specimens deadbaiting with bleak or gudgeon at dusk or during the hours of darkness will produce the unmistakable run of the eel. The Anguilla Society is a specialist eel fishing group if you are interested in real monsters

The above is a brief outline. If you require more help please contact me, Mike Hobbs, and we may be able to have a day out together catching fish.
